Mask mandate at NL Health Services Facilities

Public Health is re-establishing a mask mandate in health-care facilities as a tool to get ahead of a surge in respiratory illness — which includes a notable increase in the amount of people presenting with symptoms of pneumonia.

Masks will be required in Newfoundland and Labrador health-care facilities, including clinical areas, waiting rooms and nursing stations. It also applies to all visitors and long-term care facilities.  The health authority plans to reassess the policy in March 2025, but it's a dynamic process and could change if epidemiology improves.

Newfoundlanders and Labradorians should continue to practice good infection prevention and control practices and keep their vaccinations up-to-date.  These practices include:

  • Stay informed, be prepared and follow Public Health advice;
  • Wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds;
  • Use an alcohol based hand sanitizer in the absence of soap and water;
  • Do not touch your face;
  • Practice proper cough and sneeze etiquette;
  • Wear a non-medical mask in public indoor spaces;
  • Maintain physical distancing;
  • Increase cleanliness and ventilation of public spaces and worksites;
  • Work from home, if possible; and,
  • Stay home if you are sick and avoid contact with others.
